Grown Review

Grown Review

Title: Grown
Author: Tiffany Jackson
Style: Young Adult
Rating: 5/5

A couple months ago I listened to White Smoke on audio and I loved it.  I knew I had to read another book by Tiffany Jackson and so I read Grown. I also did this one on audio.

This story is haunting, raw and full of emotion. I really couldn't stop listening.  The story starts with a legendary dead singer and Enchanted, who wants to be a famous singer, being the main suspect.  The story is primarily told in the past tense until you catch the present tense.

When Enchanted meets Korey Fields he sees something in her. He promises to help make her a star.  She goes on tour with him despite only being 17. He promises to help her with her album. He grooms her, manipulates her and makes her question everything.

The story is a frightening and heavy read that shows abuse of power and grooming of young girls. It shows how social media, the news and other media sources make the victims become the villains.  Such a difficult read but a powerful message.

While this is not a story about R Kelly, I couldn't help but think of that when I read this book and it gave me more perspective on what young men and women go through when abuse of power is in play and also how it impacts family and friends of these victims.
