When Abby and Claire are kids they go into a creepy house shaped like an octagon where in the 1960's a father allegedly murders his entire family. There's a creepy basement with a mental door that opens and closes and locks on its own. Plus a set of stairs without a railing (yes the cover includes a railing just pretend it doesn't). Oh and the basement doesn't have a light. Creepy things happen in that basement and Abby is changed forever because of the experience.  Let's just say I am glad I don't have a basement in my house or I might never go in it again.

Fast forward to the present day where everyone is an adult and Abby decides to go into the basement again and lets just say it wasn't a good idea. Claire wants answers and comes back to her old stomping grounds to find them.

The creep factor in this one is top notch.  There were definitely moments where I was afraid something spooky would happen in my house while I was reading this, like someone ringing the doorbell or my kid coming into the room unexpectedly. I don't want to give too much away but I will say that if this were a movie I would probably be covering my eyes the entire time.  I could vividly see all the spooky stuff in my head.  I am surprised that I didn't have nightmares.  The story has multiple timelines and narrators giving you just enough info about the house and it's previous owners to keep your interest.  If you are a fan of horror and spooky stories then this is definitely one for you.
