Ember in the Ashes is one of my favorite fantasy series so when I saw Sabaa Tahir was coming out with a new book I didn't even read the synopsis. I knew I had to read it. Imagine my surprise that when I started listening to find out it was a contemporary fiction which is one of my most favorite genres.

This novel tells the story of Salahudin and Noor both of Pakistan descent and their life in the United States. Salahudin is desperately trying to save the family business as his mother's health fails and his father deals with his alcoholism. Noor has her own struggles with her uncle as she tries to get into college and escape the town a Juniper. It talks of their struggles being Pakistan growing up in a small town. Salahuden and Noor are good friends who feel like family until a big fight threatens to tear them apart.

This novel is packed full of emotion. The story is haunting, heartbreaking, beautiful and memorable. It covers such important topics in such a beautiful and gut wrenching way.  I loved these characters and I cried over the experiences they had. At times I felt like I couldn't breath.  The audio narration really brought the story to life for me. I can't say enough good things about this book.
